In several gardens I have noticed the new bronze foliage and flower buds of Sorbus caloneura (beautifully veined mountain ash, Chinese mountain ash, Chinese whitebeam) emerging. This large, deciduous shrub or small tree originates in China, it has wide-spreading branches with a flat-topped, tiered crown. A few of the rounded brown fruits had survived from the autumn display.
