                  • This Learning Scenario has received mixed feedback when it comes to the level of difficulty, but very positive feedback on how students enjoyed the debate and the activities, prompting the teachers to use even more creative questions.

                  • Students emphasized on how this lesson made them think topics and issues they had never considered in the past and on the importance of science.

                  • Due to the lack of time, some teachers discussed the topics in the classroom and did not divide students in group

 

                  Certain teachers chose to dedicate up to two additional lessons in order to implement the scenario.

                  • Due to the general interest about the topic, some teachers chose to add materials like infographics in order to inform the other students and teachers about the project.

                  • On some occasions, teachers had to dedicate more time reviewing the recommended resources in order to be more prepared and avoid losing time researching and explaining their content in class.

                  • Some teachers suggested that more time should be allocated to the Padlet and Kahoot activities specifically

 

 

About the Three Rs

This Learning Scenario has been created in the framework of the 3Rs project. The 3Rs project is building learning activities for secondary schools to introduce the principles of the 3Rs - the Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal use in science. Students will develop their critical thinking and science literacy skills by exploring topics such as ethics in science, how the European Union is protecting the welfare of laboratory animals, and what high-tech non-animal tools are available as alternatives. The learning activities are available for teachers in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), organized by the European Schoolnet Academy.

The 3Rs project has been funded by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre under a European Parliament Pilot Project. This document has been prepared by European Schoolnet (a network of 34 European Ministries of Education which aims to bring innovation in teaching and learning), in collaboration with ECORYS (international company providing research, consultancy and management services) and SYRCLE (Systematic Review Center for Laboratory Animal Experimentation)

The Neuroscience of Learning - Sage Advice: Episode 20


 Learning is a natural part of the human experience; but for many in the Learning and Development sector, training can be wrought with frustration when the process of effective learning is bypassed or ignored.

Dr. Joe Pulichino from Navex Engage breaks down the process with the “AGES” model: Attention, Generation, Emotion, and Spacing (along with repetition and retrieval). Given that the human mind can only pay attention for about 15 minutes before fatigue sets in, it becomes essential to find ways to keep learners engaged for the duration of their training by providing adequate breaks. The brain will continue its learning even during these short breaks, but will avoid exhaustion or boredom in participants. Generation in learning allows learners to “connect the dots” between what they are learning with what they already know - which helps solidify the material and improve retention. We are emotional beings, and process a lot of the world through an emotional lens. Connecting your training to the emotions of your participants helps improve associations. An added byproduct is that learners stay motivated to engage in the learning because they are emotionally invested. Spacing, along with repetition and retrieval, helps stave off the dangerous statistic that 65% of training is lost within a week. Spacing helps create frustration during retrieval, which increases the strength of neural connections - resulting in greater mastery of the training essentials. Be sure to continually reinforce the purpose behind the training, as well as the impact that the application of the learning will have on the participants’ lives. What is the goal of your learners? Why are they here? How are they going to use the training? Getting students to answer these questions will keep them motivated to stay attentive throughout the training and will help them build stronger connections to the material. Is it possible for us to rewire our brains? Yes, says neuroscientist André Vermeulen. Take his example of a woman in China who was admitted to hospital because of a neurological condition. Tests revealed that, astonishingly, her brain was missing a cerebellum – a part of the brain that gives us balance, coordinated movement, and controls certain aspects of our speech. The cerebellum is also home to fifty percent of the brain cells of humans, so it’s clearly not an insignificant part of our physiology. Amazingly, other than some persistent nausea and vertigo, the woman led a functionally normal life. So, how did her brain compensate? How was it possible that someone could have a relatively full life with half of their brain cells missing? Well, according to André, the brain has a remarkable ability to rewire itself, and it does so specifically so that we can survive and thrive in our worlds. All we need to do is put in the time and intensity that it takes to carve new neurological pathways, that will lead to our desired outcomes, and allow us to out-think our circumstances. This phenomenon, called neuroplasticity, means that it is possible for our brains to replace old negative behaviour patterns with new constructive alternatives, whatever they are. André drives the point home with a list of the three things we need to do to change our brains. By taking control of our thoughts, he says, we can shape who we become.
